Presentation of “Multitemporal and Multimodal SHM for Targeted Tunnel Inspection” at the SMAR conference 2026

The SMAR (International Conference on Smart Monitoring, Assessment and Rehabilitation of Civil Structures) is one of the leading international conferences in the field of intelligent monitoring, assessment, and rehabilitation of civil structures. It brings together experts from academia, research, and industry to discuss current developments and innovative methods in structural monitoring.

In the session “Video-Based and Imaging Techniques for Structural Monitoring“, Jan Pfeiffer presented new findings on tunnel monitoring using imaging and geometry-based techniques. The focus was on the targeted detection and assessment of damage and changes, enabling inspections to be planned and carried out more objectively, efficiently, and accurately.

The work presented focuses on the analysis of multimodal data, meaning data obtained from different sensor sources. These include RGB cameras, thermal imaging cameras, and laser scanners. At the same time, the data are analyzed multitemporally, meaning that they were captured at different points in time. By jointly analyzing this technically diverse, time-dependent information, changes in the structure can be identified and documented more effectively and used in a targeted manner to plan maintenance and rehabilitation measures.
